  • Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo with 11,000 animals, in 110 acres of award-winning zoological gardens and enclosures, is the UK’s second most popular paid-for attraction in the country. As part of their exciting and impressive £30 million expansion plan, the zoo’s entire arrival area was redesigned, including the new gift shop.

Slimline was chosen as the preferred system and fixture provider for this project.

Working closely with the nominated design house and Chester Zoo, our brief was to underpin the Zoo’s mission of conservation and education. The materials and finish selected for this innovative store were to have a natural, rustic and sympathetic feel.

The combination of birch ply joinery and our steel metal system, all finished in a clear lacquer were chosen. This was in harmony and with the same feel as the finishes to the external animal enclosures. The fabrication and burn marks from the welds, along with scurf marks from dressing back, all added to the feature look and feel requested.

The robust gondolas were given a contemporary twist with themed animals projecting high above the main steel structure. The drama was further enhanced with green grass back panels, that allowed light to shine through which added to the visual impact of the merchandise.

These all met the design brief to “bring the zoo’s external environment indoors”.

With 1.4 million visitors a year, the design and practicality of the retail fixtures needed to work for both customer and staff alike. The Slimline System allows the store to achieve this with an inherent flexibility in displaying the extensive and varied merchandise.

In conjunction with the design house and Chester Zoo, Slimline played a key part in the design, specification, manufacture and installation of this creative and original retail scheme.

The end result was truly impressive and concluded fittingly with a grand opening by the Queen.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Following a recommendation from the work Slimline produced at Chester Zoo, we were invited to attend a meeting at Yorkshire Wildlife Park to discuss their planned new retail store. A new build of circa 550 sq mtrs of retail space at the entrance to the park

Following the initial meeting and visit to the park, Slimline were asked to present designs for a new retail experience.
Meeting notes were provided and the design brief established.

“Thank you for the speedy feedback on our meeting and the notes that were very accurate” - Mike Bennett ~ Commercial Director YWPL

At the next meeting, Slimline provided mood/story boards following the established brief, which depicted the zone defined areas required. These zones represented certain areas around the world. Africa, Asia, Polar, South America and Great Britain.
The story boards included designs of stands, colour palettes, store layout options, researched information, proposed materials and even a model of one of the proposed display stands.

Please see a selection of the mood boards provided.

Pitching against others, Slimline presentation became the preferred design, look and feel for the new store, encapsulating all the elements and requirements the customer had wished for. The project began…….

“I want to start by thanking you and your designers for one of the best briefing interpretation I have seen.

We love the style and zoning theme and the flexibility for dressing and selling”

Mike Bennett ~ Commercial Director YWPL

Working within the budget, the conceptual designs was translated through technical engineering, innovative production processes, materials and product finishes, into manufactured units of the unique and bespoke nature of this project.

A challenging lead time was set to meet a desired opening date for the Easter holiday season, therefore good project management skills were required to keep everything on target for the completion date.

Working closely with the client throughout, Unitary design, Technical drawings, 3D models, samples of materials and product samples were all provided to ensure the client was fully satisfied with the products being manufactured and the desired look and feel to the project was delivered.

It was important to provide a finished project that adhered to the original designs presented.

As you can see from the photographs provided above, the design, theme and look were accurately translated into display units and elements within the store. The finished project mirrored the original concept provided.

With a snag free installation, Slimline had provided the project

• Within budget
• On time
• And to the design required.

Comments on the completion certificate read:

“Great job many thanks. WOW factor achieved”

Mike Bennett ~ Commercial Director YWPL
